Tips to start a new (2018) year

2017 was a grueling year, isn’t it? 2018 is here, is everyone excited? For me personally, 2018 is a year of focus and prosper. Here I want to share my tips to start this awesome year.

1. Take a look of important matters from previous years

Not only important matters but also your mistakes and unfinished business. Also your debts, whatever it is money or a service. These things are needs to be carried to 2018 and make sure you set a target finished them. Pick the most important ones and leave the unnecessary.

2. Keep your friends circle small

Best friends, just friends — any kind of friends, we have it. But not all people will become our forever friends — they are destined to come into your life for a reason — and maybe go.

I just cleaning up my Google Contacts. My contact list was around ~1000 persons but now it is just 190. A lot of unknown phone numbers, and people who seem will not contact me again — I just deleted a lot of them.

3. Sell your junk items

Time to cleanup your room. Take a look around — you may want to convert some of your stuff into money. Unused personal effects, toys, and things that you think you will not using it for a long period of time. You can use Tokopedia or even Facebook to sell your stuff.

4. Prioritize which stuff you need, not you want

Primary needs are still primary. You may want a new clothes, new phones or new stuff but you should rethink if all those things are truly necessary. Despite you only want it, it is not wrong to award yourself.

5. Get a job, or secondary income

These days, buying house is *maybe* practically impossible for millennials. If you still in high school/university, my advice is to go get some small jobs. Part time in restaurant/cafes will do just fine. Just don’t let your academic get distracted. If you doing it right, your parents will be super proud of you. And you will get a new experience.

For the workers, I advice you to get secondary income. Small jobs also fine, too, as long as it is legit and does not damaging someone else’s business.

Work and life balance are still important.

6. Fix your sleeping habits

You are not a morning person? Not a problem. People above 20s must get a proper sleeping hours — 8 hours is the optimum. But actually not really 8 hours — it depends how much hour your body actually needs. Some people just sleep for 5 hours and they do just fine.

This article is written for around 1.00am Indonesian time. Pfftt.

7. Eat healthy foods

In this era, people are rarely eat vegetables and fruits anymore. Highest food consumption rate are junkfoods, meats and sweets. This could lead to obesity and unhealthy body. Juice and vegetables are great and cheap. You could use recipes from the internet and buy a blender.

Eat just a few until you don’t feel hungry anymore.

8. When you set your targets, make sure it benefits you, too

“Time is money”, that famous quote. But not everything you do should rewarding you. Are you going to make your parents pay you to do housework? Hell no.

9. Get all debts from your friends.

If they borrow something from you, make sure they give them back. If you borrow something too, make sure you returned them. This would clearing up things to make your plans for 2018 easier. If there is a friend who owe you some money like just some dollars or rupiahs you could ask them again or just let them go. (If the sum is big you just dont ignore them, lol).

10. Do more money savings.

This part is related with number 3, 4 and 5. It is better to save a lot of money because you don’t know what you will use them later.

11. Avoid depression and sadness (at all cost), do fun stuff instead

Mandatory picture.

Depression and sadness are different things.

Depression is a mental health problem, very difficult to get out/fix, could lead to suicide and it is requires professional treatment. You cannot just “I’ve been sad, too” to the depressed people. You cannot solve depression by just doing fun stuff, because you will not get a mood to do fun stuff from the first place. Depressed people needs to be listened, not to be argued.

If you feel like depressed or need someone to listen, you can contact me via my email with subject [NEED HELP] or setup a meeting (Jakarta only). I cannot promise to setup a meeting because I have jobs, too.

Sadness are usually started from when you did not get what you want, or you want something without effort because the effort seems too big and not worth the value, or maybe you think life is not fair. The only thing you can do is either try again with different strategy or you can just move on. Sadness still can be fixed with doing fun stuff, or just throw “I don’t care” behavior. Because sadness are one of unnecessary thing and that does not benefit you at all.

12. Focus to the important stuff

You already set your targets. Now check again if all those were important or not.

13. Pray based on your beliefs & faith, respect your parents, make a good relationship with friends.

Unless you were an atheist you can just do respect your parents and make a good relationship with friends.
